Zanesville, zaynz'vil, OHIO, the county-seat of Muskingum co., 59 mi. e. of Columbus, on the Muskingum River, at the mouth of the Licking, and on the Baltimore & Ohio, the Wheeling & Lake Erie, the Ohio River & Western and other railroads. The city has an attractive location, in the river valleys between lofty hills. Six parks, several bridges, the courthouse, the jail, Memorial Hall, the Masonic Temple, two opera houses, the high school, the Clarendon Hotel and several business blocks are prominent features. The surrounding country is a farming region and also has deposits of limestone, clay and coal. The rivers furnish good water power, and there are potteries, terra cotta works, railroad shops, implement works, flour mills and other factories. The town was founded by Jonathan Zane and John McIntire in 1799. Population in 1910, 28,026.
